How Invislaign® Is Made

Invisalign is created by computer technology to match your oral code.Invisalign® is a straightening tool that straightens teeth without using metal brackets or wires. Invisalign is a clear aligner that can be removed at your convenience and will align your teeth in half the time it takes traditional braces to complete treatment. What makes Invisalign so unique is that it is created through the use of computer software. Invisalign was first created by a computer scientist named Zia Chisti who wanted to realign his teeth after it had shifted from not wearing retainers after his treatment with braces. Orthodontists were not keen about Invisalign at first because of Zia’s lack of dental experience, but once Invisalign started to prove effective, it became adopted as a prime teeth straightening tool. Invisalign is a calculated science that is personalized to your oral anatomy and planned thoroughly to produce the results that you want.

How It’s Made

First the doctor will take X-rays of your teeth and gums, along with pictures and bite registrations. This allows for the doctor to examine your oral situation and to come up with a diagnosis and treatment plan to suit your oral needs. Dental impressions will then be made and sent to Align Technology to be scanned by a topography scanner.  This scanner will make a 3D representation of your teeth and by using a computer software called Treat, the stages of your aligners will be visualized on the computer. Another software called Clincheck is then used by doctors to alter or tweak any aligners before the manufacturing process begins. The manufacturing process utilizes CAD-CAM (computer-aided-design and computer-aided-manufacturing.  This system  allows for mold to be made by creating them with liquid resin that when exposed to laser, will turn into a plastic material. After this is completed, aligners can be made from the molds and is made out of thermoplastic material.  The aligners are designed to apply pressure so they will fit your teeth tightly with each initial use. Aligners will move teeth .33 millimeters within a 2-3 week application duration. Each aligner is intended to be worn for 20 hours a day which will leave 4 hours to choose when you would like to take a break or relax from your aligners.
